The ex vivo locust brain barrier model is positioned between in vitro and in vivo models

  • As in vitro models it uses DMSO stock solutions and it is a medium throughput model
  • The data generated correlates to in vivo rodent data
    • The permeability model data correlates to in situ perfusion data
    • The total concentration in brain/concentration in buffer in the N2MO assay correlates to total concentration in brain/free plasma concentration in in vivo in mouse

The evolution of the brain from invertebrates to mammals:

“Surface glia show high expression of many ATP-binding cassette (ABC) and solute carrier (SLC) transporters, cell adhesion molecules, metabolic enzymes, signaling molecules, and components of xenobiotic metabolism pathways”
